World-class OLAP specialist joins development of OpusCapita’s new Liquidity Management application
World-class business intelligence expert and OLAP guru Chris
Webb spent a very busy, if cold, week in Finland in January. The
reason behind his visit was the product development of OpusCapita's
new Liquidity Management application.
'We wanted to ensure that, with the new generation OpusCapita
Liquidity Management application, reporting is as efficient as
possible using the latest technology and knowhow. We invited Mr.
Webb to participate in our development workshop for a week, as he
is one of the world's leading specialists in the field', says
Jouni Kirjola, Product Manager at OpusCapita.
Webb's work focuses on providing consultancy to banks, insurance
companies, industrial companies and software houses all over
Europe. In professional circles, this illustrious Brit is also
known for his books, internet publications and conference
presentations.
OpusCapita's January workshop was Webb's first visit to Finland.
During the week Webb, together with experts from OpusCapita, sought
the best programming solutions for demanding calculations, which
form the basis of Liquidity Management reporting.
OpusCapita's Liquidity Management reporting is based on OLAP
(Online Analytical Processing) technologies. OLAP, a database
technology, enables the fast compilation of information from
information systems in answer to queries, or for reports and
analyses. OpusCapita's applications have utilised OLAP for some
time, and the technology, with its cubic structure, is already
well-known amongst data processing professionals.
'When the latest OLAP technology is skilfully utilised in the
product development phase, reporting becomes much quicker - in some
cases, what previously took minutes can now be done in seconds',
says Kirjola, giving an example of OLAP's benefits to
customers.
Chris Webb points out that, for product development, OLAP
presents more challenges than a table-structured relational
database, since multidimensional thinking is required. 'Yet, it is
precisely OLAP's multidimensionality that makes it highly useful in
financial or financial management applications, which often contain
calculations with a high number of variables.'
What about the future - is there something groundbreaking in the
pipeline?
'Judging by R&D investments in software technology, the next
few years should see plenty of innovations but, most of all,
greater efficiency. Searches, calculations and reports based on an
ever-growing amount of data can be made faster than ever', explains
Chris Webb.
The new OpusCapita Liquidity Management application is built on
the Microsoft Silverlight platform, designed for web applications.
Development work is proceeding in phases and in active co-operation
with customers.
